Before the hot weather significantly reduced the number of species visiting the pools behind IDEEV, the month of June turned out to be just as abundant as May in terms of plants, insects and birds.

Amandine Cornille’s (GQE-Le Moulon) team published an article on wild apple trees domestication in Current Biology: Gene flow from the European wild apple and selection shaped the domesticated apple genome ( https://www.cell.com/current-biology/fulltext/S0960-9822(26)00368-4) .

The month of May is one of the richest in biodiversity and it is also the breeding season for many species. Thus, it is possible to observe at the moment animals taking care of their young and plants in full bloom around IDEEV.

Eurasian blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) Many birds have come out of their nests but remain close to their parents to still benefit from their care while learning to eat by themselves. The erasian blue tits, great tits, and european stonechats chicks look very similar to mature adults but are much less colorful. From morning to evening, we regularly ear them calling for their parents to receive food.

New species of insects, birds and plants appear in April. Some very early species are already looking for reproduction sites and the water points behind IDEEV may be chosen by some of them.

Little Ringed Plover (Charadrius dubius) Recognizable by its yellow-ringed eye, its appearance and its small size, the little ringed plover is a shorebird known for its atypical fast running. It is much less gregarious than other closely related species and hunts many invertebrates on sight by the water’s edge. After a spectacular mating display both in flight and on the ground, eggs are laid on the ground surrounded by some pebbles or herbs.

Plant Omics days 22nd and 23rd June 2026

The plant omics platforms of the Saclay plateau are organizing a symposium dedicated to the approaches they develop, “The Plant Omics Days,” on June 22nd and 23rd, 2026.

This symposium will feature presentations from the afternoon of June 22nd to June 23rd, covering innovative projects conducted by users in collaboration with our platforms, the various technologies offered by the platforms, and the latest technological developments in the field. With rising temperatures and the return of the sun, it’s time to observe the first flowers and insects of spring. Some will not remain visible for a long time, so you should take a look while they are still observable around IDEEV.

Meadow pipit (Anthus pratensis) The meadow pipit is a fearful bird that can be recognized by its long nail at the back of the leg and its large tail that it moves regularly. It is smaller than the water pipit which is also present.

Winter is the ideal season to observe birds, and especially those who are just passing through. Many migratory waterbirds make stops in temperate water points, and the IDEEV pools are no exception.

Green Sandpiper (Tringa ochropus) The Green Sandpiper is recognized by its slightly more massive build than the other Sandpiper and by its very contrasted colors between the dark brown top and the white underside. But it is especially in flight that it is distinguishable with the underside of its dark wings and its alarm call. It is a shorebird that feeds on invertebrates in water points, even small size ones, unlike other Sandpipers. It nests in the taiga and wooded wetlands of northern Eurasia. It is a shy species and therefore difficult to approach.

Science for all at IDEEV

“Science for all” programme, proposed by Université-Paris-Saclay aims at welcoming year 10 pupils interested in science from high priority area. IDEEV welcomed 15 pupils from Grigny on February 16, 2026.

They participated in two workshops :

INCREASE Symposium - March 25, 2026

The European INCREASE project ( https://www.pulsesincrease.eu/ ) is coming to an end. This project focused on the conservation and use of four food legumes, brought together 25 European partners, including IPS2 and GQE-Le Moulon. The project introduced innovative, decentralized approaches, ranging from citizen science, the involvement of European gene banks to define core collections, to the development of a web portal, and cutting-edge research in pangenomics and genotype-environment interaction detection methodologies.

We have just learned with great sadness of the death of Pierre Capy on February 3.

Pierre was a geneticist specializing in Drosophila and genome evolution. His research focused on the molecular genetics of transposable elements, their evolutionary dynamics, and their horizontal transfers. Pierre began his career at Paris-Sud University, where he obtained a doctorate in 1982. He then joined the CNRS as a research fellow. In 1987, he defended his doctoral thesis on the genetic variability of natural Drosophila populations, under the supervision of Jean R. David, before completing a postdoctoral fellowship in the United States in Dan Hartl’s laboratory, where he studied the molecular evolution of transposable elements, a topic on which he founded a research team upon his return to France. He became a professor at Paris-Sud University (Paris-Saclay) in 2001, where he taught evolutionary biology and the genomics of transposable elements. His scientific legacy is remarkable: he authored over a hundred articles in the leading journals in the field, supervised eleven doctoral students, and was a major player in the rise of transposable element genetics in France. He was also heavily involved in the administration of scientific life at the local and national levels, serving as head of the GDR “transposable elements,” president of section 29 of the CNRS national committee, president of the biology department at the university, and director of the SDSV doctoral school. He was also director of the LEGS laboratory (now EGCE) and one of the founders in 2016 of the Institute for Diversity, Ecology, and Evolution of Life (IDEEV).

24-month Postdoctoral Fellow Position in Quantitative Genetics at GQE-Le Moulon

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to join our research team at the laboratory Quantitative Genetics and Evolution – Le Moulon (GQE), located on the Paris-Saclay University campus, in the southern vicinity of Paris. The successful candidate will be part of the vibrant scientific environment of the Saclay Plant Science (SPS) community.

The postdoctoral fellow will participate to the ANR JCJC NETWITS project, led by Maud Fagny, which aims at exploring the role of gene regulatory networks structure in maize response to drought. GQE has an important expertise on the molecular bases of maize drought response, including association studies and the inference of gene regulatory networks. We thus have identified numerous loci, both genes and regulatory elements, potentially involved in determining maize yield in response to drought.

Teenagers visit IDEEV in June

Three events related to the world of education took place at IDEEV in June :

June 6 : IDEEV took part in “Journées Nationales de l’Agriculture” and welcomed two primary classes to introduce pupils to the experiments conducted at the institute : animations and guided tours of the experimental plots were proposed. Read more
June 18 and 25 : As part of the STEM Summer School organised by Université Paris-Saclay, IDEEV welcomed two classes (year 9 and year 11). The aim of this school is to give young people, particularly girls, a new perspective and a new culture in the field of hard sciences, by promoting inclusion in scientific and technological fields. June 23 to 27 : IDEEV hosted six high school students (year 11) as part of their end-of-year internship. Technicians, engineers, researchers, lecturers and communicators proposed Alban, Julie, Anass, Paul, Titouan and Lucille a rich and varied programme and introduced them to the wide range of professions and activities involved in a research laboratory. When invasive species become part of our culture

Biological invasions are widely acknowledged as a serious threat to biodiversity, global economies, and a good quality of life. Yet, they are not universally perceived as a nuisance and are sometimes gaining – often unexpectedly - cultural acceptance in local communities around the world. The consequences of this acceptance are not trivial for invasive species management.

A new study by a large international team of researchers reveals how some invasive species may be embraced by local populations as familiar or even beloved elements of their local environment, often complicating efforts to manage them. “This represents a phenomenon of ‘cultural integration’ — a process where invasive species become embedded in local traditions, identities, and everyday life”, says Ivan Jarić, researcher from the University of Paris-Saclay in France and the Czech Academy of Sciences, and lead author of the study. “Over time, they may become increasingly familiar to people and eventually get to be perceived as native elements of the environment, or an integral part of local culture.”

A day at Barbeau platform

The 15th of May, Alexandre Morfin, Charlotte Girardin and Daniel Berveiller, from the Ecophysiologie Végétale team (ESE) organized a tour of the Barbeau platform for the IDEEV people. About 30 people from IDEEV went by bus to the Barbeau Forest.

Our colleagues explain about everything about this scientific platform. The thorough visit was cut by a picnic lunch taken on the spot.
