Essential human activities, such as healthcare and food production, contribute to pharmaceutical product (PP) pollution, which has been identified as a significant stressor to aquatic biodiversity. In addition, insufficient PP removal in wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) has been repeatedly reported, leading to PP concentrations in water bodies that affect and threaten aquatic life, ecosystem health, and eventually human wellbeing.

Taking the MISSION of safeguarding aquatic biodiversity in urban and rural waters exposed to the pressure of PP pollution, NBS4AQUAMISSION aims to leverage nature-based solutions (NbS) to mitigate PP pollution. That reduction will impact aquatic biodiversity positively. The project will assess the NbS using an ecotoxicological approach, which will allow us to inform us to what extent their implementation will reduce the ecological risk of the pharmaceutical toxic “cocktail”.
